Faller Training &
QFT Development

Baumanis Timber Contracting delivers hands-on faller training BC programs on company-managed active falling sites. Since 2012, we have developed new fallers from the ground up and advanced experienced personnel toward Qualified Faller Trainer (QFT) certification — building the next generation of safe, competent hand falling professionals in British Columbia and across Canada.

New Faller Training

New faller training at Baumanis is built around progressive skill development on real operational sites. Trainees work alongside certified fallers and trainers in active cutting blocks, learning through direct mentorship rather than classroom simulation alone. Our structured 30-day training program takes candidates from fundamental chainsaw operation, tree assessment, and escape route planning through to production falling techniques under close supervision.

Each trainee progresses at a pace matched to their demonstrated competency. The program covers limbing and bucking, face and back cut geometry, hinge wood management, lean assessment, hung-up tree procedures, and the hazard recognition skills that keep fallers alive in the woods. By training on active sites with real timber and real terrain, our graduates enter the workforce with practical experience that cannot be replicated in a controlled setting.

Progressive Skill Development

Faller development does not end after initial certification. Baumanis provides ongoing mentorship and progressive skill building for fallers at every stage of their careers. From basic production falling to complex danger tree operations, steep ground techniques, and large timber management, our experienced supervisors work with each faller to identify skill gaps and build competency through structured field coaching.

Qualified Faller Trainer (QFT) Certification

The Qualified Faller Trainer designation represents the highest level of falling competency and instructional ability in British Columbia, recognized across Canada. Baumanis actively develops QFT candidates through a rigorous pathway that combines advanced falling proficiency with training methodology, adult education principles, and assessment skills. Our QFT development program prepares experienced fallers to evaluate, coach, and certify other fallers — multiplying safety and competency across the industry.

Faller Coach Development

Between production faller and QFT, the Faller Coach role bridges the gap. Baumanis develops Faller Coaches who can provide on-site mentorship, identify unsafe practices, and guide skill improvement in real time. Coaches work under QFT supervision, gaining the experience and assessment skills needed to eventually pursue full QFT certification themselves.

BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) Certification Programs

Baumanis prepares personnel for BC Wildfire Service certification levels from S-100 (Basic Fire Suppression and Safety) through S-300 (Advanced Wildfire Operations). These certifications are essential for deployment on provincial wildfire incidents and are integrated into our training programs alongside falling competency development. Crew members also complete S-185 Entrapment Avoidance, ICS training, and other required wildfire qualifications.

CAGC Chainsaw Faller Competency

The Canadian Avalanche, Geohazard, and Conservation (CAGC) chainsaw faller competency framework provides standardized assessment of falling skills across four levels. Baumanis trains and assesses fallers through CAGC Level 1 (basic limbing and bucking) to Level 4 (advanced danger tree and complex falling). Our training program aligns with CAGC assessment criteria, ensuring that fallers can demonstrate competency at each level before progressing.

BCFSC & BC Faller Training Standard

All Baumanis faller training BC programs comply with the BC Faller Training Standard (BCFTS) administered by the BC Forest Safety Council (BCFSC). The BCFTS establishes minimum training requirements, assessment protocols, and documentation standards for faller certification in the province. Our training records, assessment forms, and progression documentation meet all BCFSC requirements, and our QFTs are registered and in good standing with the council.

Why Train with Baumanis

Training on active company-managed sites means trainees experience real production conditions from day one — variable terrain, mixed species, weather challenges, and the pace of operational forestry. Our SAFE-certified safety program provides the structure and oversight that keeps trainees protected while they develop the skills and judgment that only come from time in the field. Baumanis has been building fallers in British Columbia for over a decade, and our graduates work across the province in wildfire, forestry, and land clearing operations.
