Danger Tree Assessment & Falling

Certified Danger Tree
Assessors & Fallers

Wildfire-damaged and structurally compromised trees pose immediate threats to workers, the public, and infrastructure. Baumanis Timber Contracting provides certified Danger Tree Assessors (DTA) and Danger Tree Fallers (DTF) for wildfire operations, post-fire rehabilitation, storm damage response, and forestry projects across Canada.

What Is Danger Tree Assessment?

A danger tree assessor is a certified professional who evaluates trees for structural defects, fire damage, root failure, and other conditions that make them likely to fall in an uncontrolled manner. During wildfire operations, danger trees along fire lines, roads, helipads, staging areas, and camp perimeters must be identified and managed before ground crews can safely work in the area. The DTA determines whether a tree is a hazard tree requiring removal, whether it can be safely retained, or whether work procedures need modification to account for the risk.

Danger Tree Falling

Once a danger tree assessor identifies a tree for removal, a certified danger tree faller executes the falling operation. Danger tree falling is among the highest-risk activities in forestry — fire-damaged trees are unpredictable, with compromised root systems, hollow stems, hanging limbs, and weakened fibre that can cause sudden, unexpected failure. Baumanis DTF personnel are experienced in managing these hazards using specialized techniques, escape route planning, and rigorous situational awareness protocols required under WorkSafeBC standards.

Wildfire Operations

During active wildfire incidents, Baumanis DTA and DTF personnel integrate directly with incident command structures. Our assessors work alongside suppression crews, identifying and marking danger trees ahead of fireline construction, mop-up operations, and road clearing. This proactive assessment keeps ground crews safe and prevents delays caused by unmanaged tree hazards. Baumanis danger tree teams have deployed on major wildfire incidents across Canada, operating under provincial wildfire service coordination and interprovincial mutual aid agreements.

Post-Fire Danger Tree Removal

After the fire is controlled, the danger tree hazard remains. Post-fire landscapes are filled with standing dead trees, partially burned stems, and root-compromised timber that can fall without warning for months or even years after the fire. Baumanis provides post-fire danger tree assessment and removal along roads, trails, utility corridors, recreation sites, and community perimeters — restoring safe access and enabling rehabilitation work to proceed.

Storm Damage & Blowdown Hazard Mitigation

Severe weather events create danger tree hazards independent of wildfire. Wind-thrown trees, root-sprung stems, and ice-damaged crowns threaten roads, power lines, and public safety. Baumanis DTA/DTF crews respond to storm damage events, assessing and removing hazard trees efficiently to restore access and eliminate ongoing risk.

Certifications & Compliance

Baumanis danger tree personnel hold certifications governed by the Wildlife Dangerous Tree Committee of British Columbia, including the Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor (WDTA) certificate with endorsements in Wildland Fire Safety, Forest Harvesting & Silviculture, and Parks & Recreation. Certifications held vary by role and region of deployment — our assessors and fallers carry the credentials appropriate to the jurisdiction and operation type they are assigned to. Falling personnel are certified under the BC Faller Training Standard and CAGC competency programs, with compliance to WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Part 26 and equivalent provincial standards where applicable. Baumanis has been SAFE certified through the BC Forest Safety Council since 2012.

Integration with Incident Command

Baumanis DTA and DTF personnel are trained in ICS (Incident Command System) protocols and deploy seamlessly within provincial incident management structures. Our crews understand the communication, documentation, and reporting requirements of wildfire operations — from initial assessment forms through daily hazard updates and demobilization reports. This operational integration means our danger tree teams add capacity without adding complexity to incident management.
